BALLYMURPHY: A gentle hillside village captured in a glen on mountain slopes which derives its name from "the townland of Murphy". This is the first village encountered on the Co. Carlow side by the traveller passing through the picturesque Sgollogh Gap of the Blackstairs Mountains. The Rathgeran Stone, a richly decorated coffin-shaped slab with five groups of concentric circles, lies just 2km from this pretty village under the shade of Mount Leinster. The stone dates from the Newgrange era and is thought to be at least 4,000 B.C. |
