AMENITIES
AND ATTRACTIONS:
Knockrigg
House is situated close to the village of Leighlinbridge, Ireland's
village entry and a gold medal winner in Entente Florale 2001 (the
first Irish village in 23 years to achieve this status). Leighlinbridge
is a must on the itinerary of those who wish to explore life in
rural Ireland at its very best. The Leighlinbridge district is rich
in history, favoured with fertile land and enhanced by the River
Barrow which meanders slowly through the village, bringing with
it a wealth of activities to the area. With its narrow winding streets
that rise and fall with the lie of the land, grey limestone malthouses
and jagged castle ruins overlooking a 14th century bridge, the centre
of the little town of Leighlinbridge opens a vista of an earlier
Ireland to the visitor. The foundation for its beauty lies directly
with its people who demonstrate a sense of pride and work tirelessly
to preserve, maintain and enhance this unique area.
Two
miles from Leighlinbridge is St. Lazerian's Cathedral, Old Leighlin,
which was built in the 13th century on the site of a church founded
in 632 A.D. This early church was one of the foremost monastic houses
in Leinster at one time with over 1,500 monks in residence. An important
7th century church synod took place here which determined the date
of Easter for the entire Christian world.
Fortunately,
Knockrigg House is surrounded by some of the finest countryside
in the county which makes for excellent walking routes. The Barrow
Way, originally a pathway running alongside the River Barrow is
now a national walking route and is located close to our house.
High above Old Leighlin is the Ridge Walk, which provides the visitor
with some of the €nest vistas. A range of attractive walking
packages have been arranged to help you get the most from your visit.

If
you're interested in canoeing, the River Barrow provides some of
the best waters in the country for white water rafting. Ranging
from village hopping lake trips, to floating along peaceful, tranquil
stretches of our waterway, to paddling trips, the Barrow is sure
to thrill. And after an enjoyable day on the river what better way
to relax than in the comfort of Knockrigg House.
For
those who enjoy a game of golf, tee off at the excellent nine hole
golf course situated on the grounds of Borris House, home of an
old Irish family, the MacMurrough Kavanaghs. The whole of Co. Carlow
is in fact a golfer's paradise - visitors have a marvellous variety
of courses to choose from including testing parkland courses and
a small number of clubs ideal for families and the less experienced
golfer. All are within easy reach of Knockrigg House.
