The
Dolmen Hotel stands on the spot once occupied by Belmont House,
an impressive 19th century house which was for many years the home
of the Thomas Family. Situated on the eastern bank of the River
Barrow, Belmont House was surrounded by 30 acres of parkland, tennis
courts, a walled orchard and formal gardens running down to the
river bank. Sadly, Belmont House is no longer standing as it was
demolished in the 1960’s, but today at The Dolmen Hotel we try and
bring back some of the ease, comfort and elegance that was so much
a part of life here in the 19th century.
Fishing
on our private stretch of the River Barrow, the island and 20 acres
of landscaped grounds are there for you to enjoy.
From
the time you arrive until you depart outstanding hospitality is
provided discreetly and efficiently, by staff who ensure you are
well cared for throughout your stay.
The Dolmen Hotel meets all accommodation requirements for the individual
business traveller, disabled, as well as for the family holiday.
Each
of our energy-efficient bedrooms are en-suite, with remote controlled
multi-channel T.V., direct dial telephone, trouser press and hairdryer.
Morning newspapers and tea/coffee facilities are available on request.
Ample secure private parking is provided.

Enjoying
Your Stay
The
Dolmen Hotel is the ideal base for touring the Sunny South East.
Kilkenny, Waterford, New Ross, Wexford and Wicklow are all within
easy reach. Carlow is home to Europes largest dolmen,
from which the hotel derives its name. There are lots of activities
available locally, gardens to visit, horse riding, cruising on the
River Barrow, angling, golfing at Borris, Carlow, Killerig and Mount
Wolseley Hilton Golf Clubs, walking in the Blackstairs Mountains,
The South Leinster Way and The Barrow Track, horse racing at Gowran
Park, the Curragh, Naas and Punchestown and shopping at Carlow and
Kilkenny. Clay pigeon shooting, and for the more adventurous, hang-gliding
can be organised by enquiring at reception.

The
Browneshill Dolmen, after which the Dolmen Hotel takes its name.
One
very unmistakable monument dating back to pre-historical times is
the great dolmen at Browneshill to the east of Carlow town. The
magnificent capstone has excited the interest of many antiquarians
and tourists down through the years. The dolmen has a granite capstone
weighing about 100 tonnes and is the largest of its kind in Europe.
It is thought that religious rites, possibly even human sacrifice,
were performed there for four and a half thousand years (2500 B.C.)
and is testament to the fact that even our ancestors in the mists
of pre-history regarded the area as somewhere special. Signposted,
direct access - 3km from Carlow town on the Hacketstown road.
