Set
in the beautiful green countryside of the South East, Carlow Golf
Club is a 27-hole parkland course laid out in a former wild deer
park attached to the old Bruen Estate. The course has a sandy sub-soil
which is links like with undulating terrain, numerous elevated tees,
several excellent dog legs and small slick putting surfaces. The
course is naturally free draining and as such is playable twelve
months of the year with a plugged ball almost unheard of. Extensive,
mature woods added to the njoyment of a golfing round here. It's
qualities are further enhanced by the water hazards at the 1st,
2nd, 10th and 11th holes. There are many long par 4's and the 16th,
a very demanding two shotter played through a tunnel like calley,
has been chosen by Christy O' Connor Snr. as the foremost 16th hole
in Ireland.
The
new 9-hole Oak Park golf course at Carlow Golf Club is a truly terrific
layout designed by the renowned architect, Jeff Howes. Situated
on rolling terrain, this par 35-course provides a superb challenge
to golfers of all standards. Similar to our Championship Deerpark
Course, the emphasis is on accurate iron play and a delicate short
game to extricate yourself from trouble when required. It is one
of the finest 9 holes of golf that a player can encounter anywhere
in the country. Carlow Golf Club is currently ranked in the top
20 of great golf courses in Ireland. One thing is guaranteed, once
you visit Carlow you will receive excellent hospitality, a good
day's golf and memories treasured forever.
Located
on the N9, 50 miles from Dublin and only 30 minutes from the K Club
which is host to the 2006 Ryder Cup. A range of championship courses
including Mount Juliet, Mount Wolseley, Killerig and Rathsallagh
are also located closeby.

HISTORY
OF CARLOW GOLF CLUB
The
original club was founded on 18th May 1899 as the Leinster Golf
Club with a nine hole course at Gotham to serve the Carlow/Athy
area. In 1902 the name was changed to Carlow Golf Club and affiliated
to the Golfing Union of Ireland. After the First World War membership
grew rapidly resulting in a transfer to a 164 acre portion of the
Deerpark part of the Bruen estate in 1922. The new course designer
Cecil Barcroft laid out an excellent 18 holes over the superb wooded
an undulating site. Tom Simpson assisted by Molly Gourlay was commissioned
in 1937 to redesign some ten greens and most of the bunkers. It's
a fitting tribute to these great designers of the past that the
basic course remains unchanged to this day.
